1965 Plymouth Sport Fury Hardtop
For consignment this 2 owner 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury in 2 door hardtop form. The sport designation gives us a full length aluminum body molding, dual tail lights and backup lights, an aluminum rear filler panel and all the good looks you've come to expect from the Mopar camp. This example is in very nice condition, has been upgraded to a 1978 360ci V8 and a 3-speed automatic for some ass kicking muscle car power. Plus, it comes with its original 318ci V8 poly engine, an unused factory AC kit, fender skirts, the original 14-inch steel wheels, and even a 1957 dual 4-barrel intake along with a slew of other parts. 1965 called...they're waiting for you!
Exterior
Borrowing from the Pontiac upfront we see stacked dual headlights, a snappy chromed mesh egg crate grille, near perfect badging, and a solid shiny bumper below. As we move rearward along the fairly straight side panels, with gaps well minded we can follow the body beltline aluminum trim spear which runs the length from stem to stern. All this straight steel is bathed in red paint and trimmings throughout are looking great! We note some dullness to the finish along with a few inclusions, dry spots, as well as some invasive rust in the arch of the driver's rear wheel well. On top is a thin and exciting roofline that culminates with slightly narrowing B-pillars at the rear which frame the rear glass perfectly. Speaking of the glass, it's clean and clear and is trimmed with shiny stainless surrounds. On the back, the dual tail lights and backup lights flank a central Plymouth badged aluminum panel on the trunk with all framed below by a shiny rear bumper. Well polished chrome 15-inch Cragar S/S wheels are on the corners and are wrapped in deeply treaded staggered width blackwall rubber.
Interior
A swing of the doors and I've got black on my mind with yards of black vinyl for the door panels and interior seating. All appear very nice and the front seating has been refreshed with the door panels looking like new as well with their embossed sills, shiny cranks and actuators, padded armrest and carpeted lowers. Tucked and rolled low back buckets in wide black vinyl form flank the central console that holds black ball topped shifter within a chrome and applique field. The rear bench stretches from side to side and emulates the buckets nicely. Up front, a black padded dash has some faded silver plastic bezel inserts which house gauges, heater slides, the factory clock and the factory AM radio. A black steel dash lower adds some nice contrast and has been fitted with some chrome knobs and is looking A-Ok. Clean black carpeting is noted throughout the floors and the factory black rimmed steering wheel sits atop the fixed column that now sports a Sun tachometer within a chrome pod.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we are greeted by an nicely spruced up engine bay that takes on a nice patina in its original form. Here we have a light blue painted circa 1978 360ci V8 topped by an Edelbrock 600cfm carburetor and Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. An A727 3-speed Torqueflite automatic on the back. This transmission throws power rearward to an 8-3/4 rear axle with 3.91 gearing.
Undercarriage
We note some surface rust on the floor pans, rockers, various undercarriage suspension and frame parts, but all remains structurally sound. There was at one time black undercoating applied but has since turned to a grayish tan. There does appear to be a heavy application of body filler to the lower rear quarter panels where they wrap under the body and clean dual exhaust with stock style mufflers is on for spent fossil removal. We note unequal length exhaust pipes poking out under the rear bumper and the driver's side muffler has a slight crunch to it. Independent front torsion bar suspension is seen, and on back leaf sprung suspension is working like it should. Power drum brakes are all around for the WHOAH factor.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and smooth runner when experiencing our test track. The brakes are the most important function to check before heading out to our test track. Thankfully that is the first thing we check, as the pedal in this car is very soft, but the car does indeed stop. The only other noted issue during our drive was the AM radio did not pick up sounds...do they even broadcast on the AM band these days? Otherwise things were smooth sailing with firm transmission shifts and nice ride and handling on par with cars of the era. Overall a nice experience for this classic mid 1960's cruiser.
This '65 Plymouth is extremely cool and has been cared for and upgraded with replacement parts when needed. With its nice sized V8, tailored interior and dramatic styling, it represents the pinnacle of American styling and manufacturing dominance. In need of some TLC on the braking and paint fronts, but things are still looking very good for this classic that'll draw a crowd wherever it goes, your search is over!
