DESCRIPTION:
"The Magic Foot is easy and a pleasure to use."
Made and sold in the 1940's this Magic Foot Presser Foot Set is approximately 70-80 years old. Because they were also short-lived, selling for less than a decade, these presser feet are rare. Apart from the patent engraved on some, there is nothing about them to identify them. They often go unrecognized.
I've found few ads from the era promoting them.
The production timeline is curious. In the 1946 patent, only one
foot design is featured. One of the instruction sheets reflects this. Then, in a second instruction sheet, the two different feet are described and the Shutter is renamed as a Guide. The two feet were designed for use with different thicknesses of materials. Later, sold by another company, the advertisements offered just one version of the Magic Foot (No. 1) for sale without the Guide. Since the Shutter/ Guide isn't always described in reference resources, I'm convinced few were made. I also believe many of these tiny accessories have been lost or discarded increasing their rarity.
The Magic Foot was a unique attachment in its day. Singer manufactured feet that were designated to be used with materials in specified sizes (e.g. their 1/16" Braid Foot), the Magic Foot was designed to be more universal by accommodating many sizes of thread, cord, yarn, etc. What can you do using the Magic Foot? The company promised, "No practice is necessary" and according to the instructions there are many sewing possibilities:
Monograming * Embroidery * Applique Work *Making Rugs * Making Chenille Bedspreads * Trimming Edges of Finished Pieces *Quilting
You can work with No. 3 Perle Cotton, Silk Embroidery Threads, Baby Rick Rack, Braids, Wool Yarn, Soutache, Crocheting Cotton, Chenille, Heavy Rug Wool, Rags, Stockings, etc.
With this set I am including 7, single-sided pages of information to help you become familiar with this little-known attachment.
This Magic Foot Set should fit ANY modern, low shank / side clamping sewing machine as well as vintage Singer straight stitch, vertical needle, low shank / side clamping sewing machines including models 15, 27, 28, 66, 99, 101, 127, 128, 185, 201, 222 and the 221 Singer Featherweight.
The only concern with use is ensuring the needle is properly positioned to align with the hole in the foot.
The company even suggests the foot may be bent to help with the fit.
When it was made the feed dogs of sewing machines were more narrow. Modern machines have wider feed dogs and this may affect how you are able to maneuver fabric under the foot while you are sewing.
